Amazon blocks Meta’s Muse: what was reported, and what our Amazon journeys recorded
Amazon has stopped Meta’s personal agent from shopping on Amazon.com. Our six Amazon journeys recorded a different mechanism: Amazon was rarely considered, and it never refused our agent.
This is a reported event, not an Invisible Funnel experiment. We did not run Muse and did not test the restriction ourselves. Sources are listed at the end.
What was reported
- Muse users trying to shop on Amazon were shown: “Continued access by an unauthorized AI agent violates Amazon’s Conditions of Use, to which our customers have agreed.”
- Amazon says it first asked Meta to exclude Amazon from Muse voluntarily, and that Meta never obtained its agreement to access the store.
- Amazon’s stated concerns: the agent does not identify itself when it browses, it can reach account pages and order history, and it appears to capture and store customer credentials, which Amazon says creates privacy and security risks.
- Meta’s earlier position, as reported: “Muse has no visibility into people’s passwords or payment methods. Any credentials a person shares go into secure storage.”
- GeekWire notes earlier Amazon actions against shopping agents from Perplexity, Google and OpenAI, and that Amazon runs its own “Buy for Me” agent, which identifies itself and lets brands opt out.
Amazon’s and Meta’s statements concern different things: whether the agent can see credentials, and whether Amazon accepts the account access that results. Both can hold at once. The reports do not establish that Muse is unsafe, or any effect on Amazon’s sales.
The mechanism: an access decision after the selection decision
The journeys on this site record one boundary: an agent considers or eliminates a company before any request reaches it. This report describes a second. The agent approaches the company, and the company refuses the agent for that operation.
- Selection. Which company does the agent engage?
- Access. Does the company accept this agent, for this operation?
- Qualification, transaction, service. How does the customer’s objective continue?
A customer’s choice of assistant does not settle whether that assistant can complete the journey with a given company. Amazon also runs its own purchasing agent, Buy for Me, which GeekWire reports identifies itself and lets brands opt out: the same company restricts one agent and operates another. One reported case does not establish how common such restrictions are.
What our Amazon journeys recorded
| Amazon selected | 0 of 6 journeys |
|---|---|
| Readable Amazon page obtained | 0 of 6 |
| Amazon refused our agent | 0 of 6: no bot wall from Amazon was recorded |
| How the six ended | Amazon never among the options weighed in 5 (one of those runs ran out of page reads before deciding); named but not researched before the budget ran out in 1 |
| Agent used | Claude in our research harness, not Muse |
Amazon was never listed as an option in 5 of 6 journeys, and it refused our agent in none. The five journeys that reached a decision recommended no retailer. The report concerns an explicit restriction on a different agent. These are separate mechanisms:
| Mechanism | Definition | In our Amazon journeys |
|---|---|---|
| Not considered | The company never entered the agent’s comparison. | 5 of 6 |
| Information unavailable | The conditions could not be obtained or read in that environment. | No Amazon page read in 6 of 6 |
| Explicit access restriction | The provider states or shows that this agent or operation is not permitted. | Not observed; reported for Muse only |
| Offer unsuitable | The evidence establishes a mismatch with the customer’s requirement. | Not established |
The report does not explain our result, and no Amazon count on this site was changed because of it. Open Amazon’s evidence page → · Open the Amazon story →
What remains unresolved
Neither the report nor our journeys establish what happens to the customer’s objective when an operation is refused. Four outcomes are possible:
- The agent recommends another retailer.
- The agent returns the purchase to the customer to complete.
- Research continues on permitted sources.
- The task stays unresolved.
The next release counts these outcomes in our own harness under matched conditions. We do not run Muse and do not work around refusals. A Muse user can run the same Amazon mission and submit the result; it is published as a labelled community run.
